Unconventionally, we started off with Announcements:

We had a Foundation Moment from Dean Watson: our club was very responsive to the Polio Plus campaign, and we’ve raised almost $1500! And we successfully met our goal for Every Rotarian, Every Year for the year!

We also had a Mendocino Rotary Foundation Moment: Jerry reported that there have been changes in Board membership. Barry remains as the non-Rotary member of the Board, and the Rotarians on the Board are Kathleen, Jerry, Jody, John P and Matt. Meetings will be the 2nd Tuesday of every month at noon at the Mendocino Hotel. They are looking to increase to 9 the number of Board members (from 7). They approved planting a new tree in the park to be our permanent Christmas tree.

Kira and Gary, event organizers extraordinaire!

Kira and Gary, event organizers extraordinaire!

Gary announced that Casino Night will be scheduled around the end of April or early May; we need more members on the organizing committee. Gary, Pete, Kira and Jody are on it so far – the biggest need is for a media/advertising-savvy person on the committee.

Kira announced that our Golf Tournament is being scheduled – we could change it to a Sunday this year if we want to. The club did a straw vote and chose the weekend of August 20 or 21, 2016. We’ll decide later whether to hold the tournament on Saturday vs Sunday. We were one of the only tournaments to sell out last year, and we’re hoping for another great year!

Tuesday, January 19 is our next regular club Board meeting, (yes, it’s a Tuesday, due to the holiday on Monday) at noon at the Mendocino Hotel. All are welcome, please bring $20 for lunch if you plan to eat.

Our next regular club meeting will be January 28, with 20+ members of the Interact Club. Please volunteer to sponsor a student at the meeting! The Interactors will run that meeting, which is always fun!

Club by-laws changes:

Any member can bring recommendations for changes to bylaws; we planned on seeking a yes or no vote today on recommendations that have previously been brought forward and discussed by the club, but since there was a question about properly noticing the meeting, the vote was delayed. The recommended changes will be sent out to the club again for review, and the meeting vote will be announced prior to the next meeting.

Meeting date discussion:

Some members would like to return to weekly meetings. A compromise was offered: why not have 3 monthly meetings at the Hill House? This would entail 2 regular meetings plus a required Board meeting, and a committee meeting (since everyone’s supposed to be on a committee). This might be a good way to accomplish a lot more… Bylaws revisions will need to include change to meeting date.

The majority of members raised hands in favor of this option: to hold two regular meetings (on the 2nd and 4th Thursdays), plus a Board meeting (3rd Thursday) which everyone would attend. This matter will have to be formally approved during the vote on bylaws revisions.

Thoughts for the Day, from Pete: “To be an overachiever, you have to be an overbeliever.” and “There’s no personal charm so great as the charm of a cheerful temperament.”

Today’s Program:

Tiarra Rogers is a freshman at Vassar College, and she shared stories, photos and information about the campus and campus life. Meryl Streep, Ann Hathaway, and Grace Hopper are among Vassar’s famous alumni. The campus is beautiful, with about 2400 students. There are many active clubs and activities, including drama, arts, sports and more. Thank you, Tiarra, for a lively and inspiring presentation!
